International Practicum, Spring 2010

There are two opportunities to engage in an International Practicum (student teaching) experience this spring, either at the St. Mary’s Primary School in Crewe, England or one of the laboratory schools on the campus of the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan (Rio Piedras campus).  This is a one quarter (typically seven - eight weeks), six credit experience that begins at the start of the semester (third quarter). You must make application for this experience as you would for your Massachusetts school practicum – applications are due October 1, 2009.  You must have met practicum eligibility through your department.  Participants will selected by representatives of the School of Education and Allied Studies.

One opportunity is at the St. Mary’s School in Crewe, England, about 45 miles south of Manchester.  Manchester Metropolitan (MMU) has a campus at Crewe and you would live in the dorms at MMU/Cheshire. This fall we have one  undergraduate (in SPED) and one graduate student (El Education) at St. Mary’s.

Another opportunity is in San Juan at one of the laboratory schools (university schools) associated and on the campus at the University of Puerto Rico.  Some knowledge of Spanish would be beneficial.  This fall we have two students, one undergraduates in Early Childhood and one post baccalaureate in Elementary Education in San Juan.

For special educators or Dual majors, this will be your ‘inclusion’ experience.  You will return to Massachusetts to complete your practicum requirement in the second quarter of the spring term.

Note that we very much encourage applications from those preparing to be middle or high school teachers - this program is NOT limited to those in the early grades.

For more information, please review the application and supporting materials below - for further information please contact Dr. Bob MacMillan at rmacmillan@bridgew.edu.

Information Gathering and Meetings --

  • You need to complete the questionnaire to begin the information and selection process.  You will send the questionnaire to Dr. MacMillan at the aforementioned email address.
  • Note that you will need a letter (or email) of support from a member of the faculty.

  • We will work with Ms. Susan Rachouh (susan.rachouh@bridgew.edu) in the Office of Study Abroad located in the Maxwell Library.of Study Abroad Programs at Bridgewater State.  Her office will assist you in specific travel questions and arrangements.
