International Practicum, Fall 2012There are five opportunities to engage in an International Practicum (student teaching) experience this Fall: at the St. Mary’s Primary School in Crewe, England, the schools in Dublin, Ireland, Colegio Menor, an international school in Quito, Ecuador, the schools of Belize or one of the laboratory schools on the campus of the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan (Rio Piedras campus). This is a one quarter (typically seven - eight weeks), six credit experience. You must make application for this experience as you would for your Massachusetts school practicum – applications are due February 1, 2012. You must have met practicum eligibility through your department. Participants will be selected by representatives of the College of Education and Allied Studies. One opportunity is at the St. Mary’s School or the St. Thomas More High School in Crewe, England, about 45 miles south of Manchester. Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has a campus at Crewe and you would live in the dorms at MMU/Cheshire. This Spring we have two undergraduates - Dual license and special education - at St. Mary’s. Review the Study Abroad St. Mary's site. Another opportunity is in San Juan at one of the laboratory schools (university schools) associated with and on the University of Puerto Rico campus. At UPR, you would live in the international student residence hall. Some knowledge of Spanish would be beneficial. This spring we have two undergraduates, one in Elementary Education and the other in Special Education, in San Juan. Review the Study Abroad UPR site. And new this past fall (2011), we had five students (four early childhood and one elementary) undergraduates in the schools in Dublin. This opportunity is associated (and you live on campus) with the Marino Institute of Education. Review the Study Abroad Marino site. This spring we had two new opportunities - to go to Belize and to Quito, Ecuador. In Belize you will be in the schools in Belize City or San Pedro Island. Review the Study Abroad Belize site. In Quito you will be teaching (and living with a host family) at Colegio Menor, an international school. Review the Study Abroad Colegio Menor site. For special educators or Dual majors, this will be your ‘inclusion’ experience. You will return to Massachusetts to complete your practicum requirement in the second quarter of the spring term. Note that we very much encourage applications from those preparing to be middle or high school teachers - this program is NOT limited to those in the early grades. For more information, please review the application and supporting materials below - for further information please contact Dr. Bob MacMillan at rmacmillan@bridgew.edu.
