Math Placement Test Reviews

Before beginning a program of study at Bridgewater State University, each student's mathematics placement is determined by a combination of factors — declared major, transfer credit (if any), and test scores. The information contained on the math placement information page can help determine the appropriate mathematics track for each program of study, and what initial placement a student may be given based on these factors.

Placement is an ongoing process; students wishing to re-test and improve their placement standing may register for a 6-Cess Workshop; information on these workshops is provided below.

Placement testing is a vital part of the placement process. It is the responsibility of the Academic Achievement Center to ensure that each student is placed into a mathematics course:

Unless an exemption is granted on the basis of transfer credit or SAT scores, each student will be given a nationally recognized Accuplacer Computerized Placement Test to help determine appropriate placement. This test will determine whether a student's mathematical skills are sufficient to be immediately successful in college-level mathematics, or whether a developmental mathematics review course will be required first.

It is critical that students take this test seriously! The result should be an honest reflection of mathematical skill, and time spent in pre-college-level developmental math will delay progress toward a degree.

The AAC and Department of Mathematics offer the following materials to help students to review and prepare for the math placement tests.

Testing? Re-testing? Make a plan for 6-cess!

Don't let a little rust on your math skills delay your progress at BSU!
6-Cess Workshops have three components:
  • +2-week online math review
Work at your own pace, reviewing exactly what you need
You must complete this review before attending a workshop.
  • +2-hour on-campus workshop
Finish your review with the help of expert math learning assistants
  • +2nd chance placement test
Show off your refreshed math skills by re-testing
  • +6-cessful refresher course
If successful, re-register for college-level math the same day
