Many students enter college unprepared for the academic demands and encounter professors do not meet the literacy needs of their students. Teaching needs to be about helping students learn the material and develop literacy skills. Students need to learn ways to activate prior knowledge, make connections, and monitor learning. It is the teachers’ responsibility to embed, teach, and model reading and writing strategies, and by doing so assist students in learning content material. Therefore, during pre-service and professional development programs, reading specialist must teach strategies for content area literacy instruction. These programs will give content area teachers opportunities to learn ways to assess whether their students understand the assigned reading materials and to plan accordingly.
