                      Analysis of Students’ Change

The researcher analyzed the results and concluded that the students responded to the intervention in a variety of ways.  All of the students benefited from the intervention.  Most of the changes in student performance were minimal.  Each grew in an individual way.  As always, each student possessed different strengths and weaknesses entering the study, so as a result, each student exited the study completing a personal best.

Student 1 became stronger in word recognition.  His decoding strengthened, but it did not transfer into the encoding piece. This may be due to the fact that he did not want to be involved with spelling intervention. Student 1 read with prosody and exhibited skills of a proficient reader. His reading was accurate and he had good fluency.  He displayed good intonation. However, his encoding skills do not match that of a proficient reader.

Student 2 was always in a rush to finish the assignments.  However, he did increase in his independent reading level; his developmental spelling stage remained unchanged.  This may be due to the fact that Student 2 was concerned about what was happening around him instead of concentrating on the assignment.

Student 3 did grow in word awareness.  She had a difficult time learning the sounds of diphthongs; as a result, her developmental spelling stage continued as is.  This may be due to the fact that she had a slight hearing impairment.

Student 4 showed the most growth.  Her independent reading level improved as did her developmental spelling stage.  Her developmental spelling stage ended at grade level, although her independent reading level is still slightly below. This may be due to the fact that she was a motivated learner and wanted to become a better reader and writer.
