New Technologies in the Visual Arts 2006

 

Day-by-day Syllabus

Unless otherwise noted, the Digital Group of 12 participants will meet with Prof. Gary Stanton in Room 202 of the Art Center.  This lab is equipped with 16 Macintosh computers (G3) and 2 PC’s, 3 scanners, and two color laser printers.  The software that participants will be using is Adobe Photoshop 7 and all computers are connected to the Internet.

 

The Printmaking Group of 12 participants will meet with Prof. Joan Hausrath in Room 104 of the Art Center.  The print studio is equipped with 2 etching presses and a Canon Image Runner photocopier.

 

A full-time tech assistant will be available during the meeting sessions and participants will have access to the lab and studio in the evenings and on weekends to continue their work independently.

       Pretest and Pre-Portfolio Review

       Presentation: Introduction and Overview of Institute and Assignments

       Discussion: Photographic property rights.

·        1 - 4pm:  Printmaking  Group:  Introduction to traditional lithography and image making for Pronto plates utilizing direct methods (drawing and painting) combined with photographic images printed from a photocopier (photomontage.) Lecture, demo, hands-on.

Tuesday, July 11 

·        9 - noon, 1 - 3pm:  Digital Group: Introduction to photo manipulation and printing on Macintosh computers with Adobe Photoshop software.  Begin work on portfolio of images related thematically. Lecture, demo, hands-on.

·        9 - noon, 1 - 3pm:  Printmaking Group: Printing Pronto Plates: Introduction to the etching and litho presses, papers, printing procedures using black ink and to the safe and efficient clean-up and maintenance of the print studio. Begin work on portfolio of images related thematically. Lecture, demo, hands-on.

·        3 – 4pm Both Groups:  VES training of VHD and Forum

Wednesday, July 12

  • 9 - 10am: All Participants. Anderson Gallery, Art Center Visit Anderson Gallery at Bridgewater State College, to view a group exhibition of the work by former content institute participants. Discussion of work in exhibit.

  • 10 - noon, 1 – 4 pm: Both Groups.  Continue working with, manipulating and printing photographic images. Lecture, demo, hands-on.
