DESCRIPTION

SYLLABUS

New Technologies in the Visual Arts focuses on the manipulation of photographic images in the making of art.  Participants will explore the hands-on use of photographic images in the making of digital art with Adobe Photoshop or prints using a non-toxic lithographic process.  Participants will also gain an understanding of the unique aesthetic and expressive issues of using photographs in art through readings, class critiques, and slide lectures and discussions. Slide lecture topics will include 19th and 20th century artists who have worked with photomontage and photo-collage  as well as historical overviews of photography, lithography, and digital art. Class discussions will include issues of property rights and plagiarism as they apply to published photographs and the Internet, and the distinctions between fine art and digital printmaking and mechanical reproduction.

The institute is designed for art educators teaching at the secondary level.  No prior experience in printmaking is required to enroll in the silk screen/lithography class.  A working knowledge of Windows or Mackintosh platforms is required for enrollment in the digital art class.

The institute is offered free to Massachusetts high school teachers who may earn 67.5 PDPs by participating.  Participants will be expected to complete a series of assignments including a portfolio of art work and a curriculum project.  Printmaking and computer studios will be available to participants outside of scheduled class time.

Three graduate credits (optional) from Bridgewater State College may be earned for a reduced tuition of $275.00.
