With South Africa's very high rate of unemployment (some estimates put it above 40%), people are hard-pressed to make a living. Many earn a little money by selling goods along the road, hoping that passing motorists will buy the fruit, vegetables, or handicrafts. This photo taken outside the town of Fort Beaufort is common. The women are selling prickly pears, grown on local cactus bushes. One of those bundles will sell for 5 Rand, equivalent of 50 U.S.cents. On a good day they could earn 30 Rand ($3); a difficult life.
