Introduction

An integrated preschool includes both children with special needs and those children who are developing normally. Many preschools include children with disabilities of varying severity. With the passage of IDEA, school districts were mandated to provide services to all children. However, many administrators and staff members cannot agree on what should be included in a literacy curriculum. Research shows that some of the important elements to include are: developmentally appropriate curriculum, shared book reading, play centers with literacy materials, phonological awareness training, and parent education.  The research is discussed in the individual sections.
