What is gold?

Gold is a chemical element (Au) atomic number 79 with atomic weight of 196.967.  Being the most malleable of the known metals gold is also dense, soft and shiny.  The precious metal is highly sought after for current market price.  Gold is combined with other alloys to create a karat weight which is defined by a purity percentage.  Pure gold is 24 karat where 14 karat is 58.5% pure and 10 karat is 41.7% pure.

Where is gold found today?

South Africa currently top market for gold mining.  Gold can also be found in Australia, China, Russia, Peru and the United States.  Mines in South Dakota and Nevada supply two-thirds of gold used in the United States
