              Summer of My Life

Will this one be the summer of my life,

the season of my flowering and fruit,

the one delayed so long by barren strife,

diverted from its course by vain pursuit?

Now let the rays of noon burnish my skin

and the warm evening rain sodden my hair.

Let the days of fertile promise begin

while I soar like a seed through fragrant air.

My dormant thoughts are tilted toward the sun.

The hum of life provokes me in the night,

and I feel the sap of creation run.

At last the vital elements are right

for a season whose bounty when displayed

will be sweeter for having been delayed.
