from Tracings (Poems 1964-1992)

              Jeremy and Sarah

Twenty-five year old Jeremy

is a virgin still.

Speaking constantly of peace

and social reform,

his words march off his tongue

and through the black jungle of his beard

like an army of little mechanical men

with keys twisting in their backs.

Sarah is eighteen years old

and would like to solve his problem.

Her strategy is to penetrate his reserve

by showing interest

in his favorite subjects.

At the right moment she springs her attack

but is cruelly beaten back

by Jeremy's army of little mechanical men.
