from Tracings (Poems 1964-1992)

    Impressions at Evening

  (Prospect Terrace, 1969)

In the green on green shadows

of tall trees in the park,

lovers meet to see the sun

hide its face in the dark.

The windows of empty buildings

   become gilded with light,

and above the vacant city

   swallows circle in flight.

While the river in adagio

   meanders to the bay,

the sun sits on the horizon

   like a giant bouquet.

The city becomes silhouettes

   against a purple sky,

as the lovers mingle closer,

and the sun winks its eye.
