Gypsy Spell
(for Cynthia)
I dreamed I was chief of a gypsy band,
dressed in suede boots and blouse of brocade,
hidden under my sash, a silver blade,
wearing three ruby rings upon each hand;
that I wandered across this dreary land
in a wagon stocked with goods to trade,
through each sullen town and quiet glade,
with fifteen vagabonds at my command.
I dreamed that you joined my gypsy band
and danced by the campfire's crimson glow,
with tangled hair and bare feet on the sand,
aroused by a spell only gypsies know--
that you danced madly on till the fire died,
then soothed your wild heart that night at my side.
