                Autumn Nocturne

On one of those enchanted autumn days

when the season's festively colored flame

is filtered through an opalescent haze,

we roamed down quiet streets till darkness came.

The spreading mist had now reduced our view

to partial forms and faint lights in the gloom.

The pleasant world moments ago we knew,

now seemed to be the very edge of doom.

The vagueness of the landscape brought to mind

cosmic meanings we futilely pursued,

and even matters of a mundane kind,

in the mist we found a similitude.

The wisdom of the evening was revealed

in fragments sketched upon a vast dark field.
