International Practicum, Fall 2014

There are six opportunities to engage in an International Practicum (student teaching) experience each semester: at the Leighton Academy (N-11 years) or Ruskin Secondary School in Crewe, England, the elementary schools in Dublin (an Early Childhood, Elementary or Special Education experience), Colegio Menor, an international school in Quito, Ecuador, the schools of Belize or one of the laboratory schools on the campus of the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan (Rio Piedras campus).  We are sending students to our newest partner, the Hong Kong Institute in Education this fall - our first students going to Asia to student teach.

This is a one quarter (typically seven - eight weeks).  We will determine which quarter you 'go out' - this past fall most students went out 2nd quarter.  You must make application for this experience as you would for your Massachusetts school practicum – applications are due for the spring by October 1st, for the fall, by February 1st.  You must have met practicum (coursework and all required MTELs) eligibility through your department.  Note that application dates may vary department by department.  Participants will be selected by representatives of the College of Education and Allied Studies.

One opportunity is at the Leighton Academy (N-11years) or the Ruskin Secondary School (11-18 years) in Crewe, England, about 45 miles south of Manchester.  The Leighton Academy holds the international School Award, provided by the British Council.  Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has a campus at Crewe; you would live in the residence halls at MMU/Cheshire. In spring 2013, for instance, we had three undergraduates - secondary education (chemistry), Dual license and special education - in Crewe.

Another opportunity is in San Juan at one of the laboratory schools (university schools) associated with and on the University of Puerto Rico campus.  Some knowledge of Spanish would be beneficial - you would teach (in English) in an ESL classroom.  This past fall, 2012, we had two undergraduates in Elementary Education and one graduate student in San Juan.

This fall, we have three students (two dual license students doing their inclusion setting there and one early childhood student teacher) undergraduates in the schools (St. Brigid's Girls School) in Dublin.  This opportunity is associated (and you live on campus) with the Marino Institute of Education.

Two of our newer opportunities are to go to Belize and to Quito, Ecuador.  In Belize you will be in the schools and living on San Pedro Island.  This fall we have a dual license student, and an elementary and a early childhood major in Belize.  In Quito you will be teaching (and living with a host family) at Colegio Menor, an international (interestingly, the most 'American' of the schools we work with) school.  This past year we've had a music major and an English major go to Menor.  This fall we have three elementary ed majors and one secondary English major.

This fall we have the opportunity to go to the Hong Kong Institute of Education and student teach at an international school in Hong Kong.  Yes, very exciting!

For special educators or Dual majors, this will be your ‘inclusion’ experience.

Note that we very much encourage applications from those preparing to be middle or high school teachers - this program is NOT limited to those in the early grades.

For more information, please review the application and supporting materials below - for further information please contact Dr. Robert MacMillan at rmacmillan@bridgew.edu.
