From the Tinsley Center basketball court to classrooms in Ireland, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Belize Shanghai and Ecuador (and others!), Dr. Robert MacMillan’s passion for helping students achieve their dreams knows no bounds. In fact, the opportunity to support student success is what attracted MacMillan to, coming from Penn State, to Bridgewater State in 1999.

“I wanted to be more on the ground with teaching and mentoring students and Bridgewater, as the preeminent teacher training special education program in New England, afforded me a place where I could teach and mentor,” he said. “It was a wonderful environment.”

After 25 years as a Bridgewater school psychologist and special education professor, MacMillan is retiring. He served as the chair of the Special Education department their graduate coordinator for 9 years and led the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders for two years.

“I feel like I’ve had nine lives, if not more,” he said. “I’m a better person, teacher and husband because I’ve had all of these different experiences.”

A former public schoolteacher, MacMillan became heavily involved in the campus community.

For almost two decades, he oversaw BSU’s international student teaching program as more than 300 students spent eight weeks abroad. MacMillan, who often traveled to the student teaching sites himself, forged numerous friendships with the educators he met during his travels.

Back on campus, MacMillan served as the faculty athletics representative for eight years and launched a program to match faculty members to mentors BSU athletic teams.

“It’s important to not just be involved in academics, but arts and sports and different aspects of the school,” he said.

In retirement, MacMillan said he will miss the students and his colleagues the most. But he plans to continue cheering on Bears sports from the stands. And he and his wife, Lisa, established an endowment for Bear Athletics, and funds to support international student teachers.

“It’s been a great experience,” he said. “I’m a very proud Bear.”

Grant Awards

The Uberoi Foundation for Religious Studies awarded funding, in July 2018 and again in 2019, to BSU for the project, “National Uberoi Foundation Fellow Program of Educational Training of Teachers for Classroom Teaching and Dharmic Traditions”.  This project involved web-based training for developing an online, 3-credit course at BSU, to secondary school teachers for them to effectively teach Dharmic culture and traditions to their students.  This program was led by Dr. Robert MacMillan, Professor of Special Education and Chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders within the College of Education and Health Sciences.  The goal was for teachers to enhance their content knowledge and confidence to effectively prepare well-informed discussions and assignments within their classroom on Dharmic traditions.
