| Dear REAPS,
In 2008, China will be the
focus of more international attention than ever
before as the Olympic Games come to Beijing. To
the Chinese government, the Beijing Olympics are
a major opportunity to showcase themselves to
the world as legitimate, respectable political
leaders and to obscure problematic issues
like Tibet and human rights. To us, Tibetans and
supporters, the Olympics are a huge opportunity
to take the global spotlight on Beijing and turn
it to Tibet, raising awareness around the world
about Tibet's plight and calling on the Chinese
government to free Tibet by 2008 or face massive
protest.
We need your
help! This campaign will be building over the
next three years, and right now there are two
important actions that you can take, as an
individual or as a chapter. Also below are some
upcoming important dates for the campaign. If
you have any questions or need help, please
email Freya at
campaigns@studentsforafreetibet.org.

Beijing 2008: Take Action
1. Write a letter to Hu Jintao, President of the
People's Republic of China.
Ask your friends and family to do the same, or
for chapters, do outreach on campus to ask
people to write short notes or sign a petition,
downloadable at
www.studentsforafreetibet.org/downloads/olympics_petition.doc
In your letter,
* Call on the Chinese government to end its
occupation of Tibet by 2008.
* Call for the immediate release of
all Tibetan political prisoners, including
Tenzin Delek Rinpoche and Gendun Choekyi Nyima,
the Panchen Lama.
* Notify him that until China leaves Tibet,
Tibetans and supporters will use the Olympic
Games as a means of drawing attention to China's
occupation of Tibet and its deplorable human
rights record.
Send your letter to:
President of the People's Republic of China
Hu Jintao
Guojia Zhuxi
The State Council General Office -
Yongneixijie
Beijingshi 100017
People's Republic of China
Salutation: Your Excellency
Send a copy to the
president of the Beijing Organizing Committee:
Qi Liu, President
Beijing Organising Committee for the Games
of the XXIX Olympiad
24 Dong Si Shi Tiao
Dongcheng District
Beijing 100007
People's Republic of China
Fax: + 86 10 6528 2008
Salutation: Dear Mr. Qi
2. Submit a
slogan for the 2008 Olympics!
The Beijing Organizing Committee
recently put out a call for submissions of a
slogan to be used for the Beijing Olympics. The
slogan will replace the one used for Beijing's
Olympic bid, “New Beijing, Great Olympics.” The
deadline has now passed, but some slogans are
never too old. What comes to mind when you think
about China and Tibet ? Occupation,
imprisonment, torture, mass repression, an
authoritarian government, resistance,
endurance...? Make up a short slogan about China
and Tibet and submit it along with a short and
courteous note of explanation to:
wenhua@beijing-olympic.org.cn. For
chapters, you might want to come up with a
slogan as a group, or send this note around to
your email list, asking people to send in
individual submissions.
Here are the guidelines
from the Beijing Organizing Committee, to help
get you thinking!
1. The participating Slogan should be an
embodiment of the concept of “Green Olympics,
Hi-Tech Olympics and People’s Olympics” with
“People’s Olympic” as its highlight.
2. The Slogan should reflect the unique
cultural background and humanism of China and
Beijing.
3. The Slogan should be easy to read and
remember, and can be understood and shared by
people from different cultures.
4. The Slogan should be emotional and
inspiring, and can be presented with strong
visual effects.
5. The Slogan should also fully reflect the
Olympic Spirit. |
