TEACHING TECHNOLOGY

HELP! ... I need somebody...
(my apologies to the Beatles...)

As one of the two Teaching Technology Fellows (along with Marty Grossman)on campus this year, I strive to make myself available as much as possible.  "Regular" office hours at the TTC have not worked as well in the past as being available by email (I'm really not on it all the time, it just seems like it)... I have found that this is often the fastest way to get an answer back to you or to set up a time to meet if we need to!  You can also leave me a voicemail at ext. 2633...  If I don't have an answer, I will find someone who does.
"OFFICIAL" OFFICE HOURS: TBA (Spring '08... email me!  ramey@bridgew.edu)
Upcoming TTC Seminars NOTE: Microsoft Windows "Vista" stuff...

I will be holding at least two technology seminars during the spring semester... location, date and time to be announced.  Watch for an announcement via email from our fearless leader, Eric LePage or in the Community Announcements.  In all likelihood, one of these will look at some promising new uses for the Tablet PC (wireless classroom interface?).

My Expertise
(and I use that term very loosely...)

1) Classroom technology. I can give you a guided tour of the classroom front ends.  Usually, I can solve most problems with front ends, although now that I've said that, I'm sure I'm doomed.
2) Laptops/TabletPCs.
Okay, I'm not quite an "expert" on the TabletPCs yet... but I've been using one for a while now and have found it to be quite handy.
3) PowerPoint.  I use it for my intro course - almost the entire lecture series is on PPT.  There are good and bad things about PowerPoint, and many of the bad things result from us trying to use too many of the gee-whiz animations and plug-ins.  SIMPLER is BETTER.  I also use PowerPoint in upper-level courses, but as of yet, much less regularly.  That may change - see 5 below.
4) FrontPage.
I use FrontPage to create this website.  The learning curve is pretty low, and for most things, I find it works.  You don't need to know a lot about HTML coding (actually, you don't have to know anything) to build a pretty decent webpage.  I don't do a lot of "fancy" - as you can see here.  Generally, I find the whiz-bang websites (a) distracting, (b) annoying, and (c) slow, often even on broadband.  One thing to keep in mind - many of our students do not have broadband access off-campus, and bandwidth-intensive webapges can take a looooooooooong time to load on a 56k modem.
(Rule of thumb:  If they're taking a quick coffee break while your page is loading, that's okay... but if they're going to dinner, doing a load of laundry and catching the season premiere of American Idol... ...that's not good!)

NOTE: FrontPage will soon be "going away"... Microsoft, in keeping with its policy of not allowing us to get too used to anything, is rolling out two new web development tools, "Expression Web" (along with three other apps in a "suite"... bleah...) and "SharePoint" (a server-based application that few of us will probably use).  SPRING '08 update - Sharepoint will be available on campus... if you've used FrontPage, you won't find it much different other than a somewhat more confusing interface because it likes to open all sorts of info/tool frames.
5)  New stuff we're trying out in the Spring '08 semester... more info coming soon...
