1. John TYSON was born in 1635 in Wales . He died in 1683 in Accomack County , Virginia . John Mathiason JAN TYSON

AKA: John Tyson's original birth name was Jan Mattison

Notes from Elsie Tyson Hughes: John TYSON (first known ancestor of our line) is found in Northampton County , Virginia , as early as 1664. He is found in the tithables list (head tax lists) as early as 1664 as "Jan MATHIASON", in 1675 as "John MATHIASON", in 1676 as "John MATTISON" and in 1677 as "John TYSON". On March 27, 1679 "John TYSON and Susannika his wife and Matthias TYSON their son" bought 100 acres of land in Northampton County , Virginia from William ANDREWS. John TYSON appears to have died in Northampton County , Virginia during the first half of 1683, his Will being dated March 1, 1681 , and probated August 28, 1683 . In the Will he refers to his wife "Susanna TICE" and his "three children Mathias TICE and Anne TICE and Katherin TICE". John himself is referred to in his own Will as "John MATTICE" and "John MATTISON" and even signed his name as "Jan MATTISON". One must understand when reading the variations of the name "TYSON" that it underwent anglicization. It is the belief of some that John TYSON's real name was "John Mathias TYSON" because of the resemblance of the use of the name "Matt TYSON" for Mathias TYSON in a few documents and the names "MATTICE" and MATTISON". Source: Research of Bruce Tyson, and others: Because the name was anglicized after arrival back in English controlled Virginia, it is believed that the Tison family migrated from England to Holland for religious purposes, and then migrated to Virginia about the middle of the 1600's.Notes from Vera Strayhorn Tyson: According to tradition, five TYSON brothers; William, JOHN, Samuel, Joel and Uriah came to America from Wales prior to 1635. All of these names are carried by the John Tyson descendents, through succeeding generations. These brothers settled in the Coastal area of Virginia and some later moved to NC. Other European Tyson families came a few years later and settled in Pennsylvania . The Virginia Tyson's are thought to be progenitors of this line.Source: Whitelaw, " Virginia 's Eastern Shore, Northampton Co VA", page 204: Re: Andres land - - 100 acres purchased in 1679 by John and Susannika Tyson and their son Mathias from William Andrews. Sold in 1691 by Robert and Susannika Thompson and Mathias Tyson, all of Accomack County . (After the death of John Tyson, Susannika married Robert Thompson.) Source: As transcribed by Paul Tyson - 1679 Deed: Northampton Co VA, Deed Book 11, page 181, dated 27 Mar 1679: "I William Andrews of Northampton Co to John Tyson of county aforesaid planter, and Susannika his wife and Mathias Tyson their Son, one plantation, 100 acres in county aforesaid, to said John Tyson and Susannika his wife for and during their natural lives and from and after their decease to the said Mathias Tyson his hairs and assigns. Wit: Ravenaderi (?) Will Andrews Jno Tankred Original Deed book index listed this purchase under "Mattison, John, his Conveyance from Mr. Wm Andrews".

Tyson: The son of Ty, a variant of Dye, a pet form of Dioysius (Greek God of wine.)

The Tysons originated in Germany and went up the Rhine River toRotterdam in th Netherlands . From there they emigrated toEngland. Leaving England , they went to Pennsylvania where theywere instrumentl in founding the city of Germantown . Recordscompiled by the Daughters of the American Revollution (Compiledby Elise Tyson Hughes) indicate that John and 4 brothers came toAmerica before 16935. They settled in the Coastal area ofVirginia.

Killed in the Tuscarora Indian War. The Tysons , members of one of the oldest and largest families of Pitt County, are the descendants of Mathias Tyson, who was born around 1660. In 1679, he, his mother Susannika, and his father John , a planter, purchased together a farm on Virginia 's Eastern Shore in Northhampton County . After his father's death, he and his wife Mary lived in adjoining Accomack County from around 1691 to 1702.

He and his family entered North Carolina as early settlers of Bath County , in the area which is now Hyde County , and lived near Slade's Creek,a branch of the Pungo River . For the next 25 years the Tysons lived in the same area, and son Edward were to remain an d leave decendants there. Then, in the 1730's began a great migration of the family and a rise to prominence. Sons Cornelius, Edmond , and Thomas Tyson, and John Hardee, husband of their sister Susannah, received large land grants in the area which was later (1760) to become Pitt County . Here they prospered and multiplied so that by 1762, the date of the oldest Pitt County tax list, 12 of the 492 households were headed by the grandsons of Mathias Tyson. The old homestead was on the Norths ide of Tyson's creek and Little Contentnea Creek, ten miles west of Greenville .

"At First, Carolina settlers and Native American mostly got along. But resentment grew with the Tuscarora Indians over land and trade and how the settlers treated them as savages. The tension exploded in 1711. The Indians attacked NC colonists along the Neuse and Pamilco Rivers , Killing 130. -Foon Rhee
