Linked to President George Washington

Names in BOLD are my ancestors.

THIS ENTIRE DESCENDANCY LIST, INCLUDING NOTES, IS FROM Our Heritage: A Genealogy of the Descendants of Jacob Carter of South Carolina. Mary Ketus Deen Holland, compiler. 1974. Our Heritage drew heavily on information from Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia by Folks Huxford.

First Generation

1. Thomas CARTER Sr. was born before 1652 in England. This genealogy begins with Thomas Carter who came to America from England prior to 1652. He married Catherine Dale in 1670 and is the ancestor of the Carters of North Carolina (Carter Family History by J. Montgomery Seaver). He was a Captain in the Virginia Militia and member of Council of Burgess 1677. One son, Thomas Carter Jr. married Arabella Williamson, and their known children are Jacob, Joseph (1696-1751) married Catherine Stevens, Isaac, Moore, James, and Peter. Another son, John Carter, born 1674, married Francis Ball, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Ball who were the parents of Mry BAll, mother of General George Washington.

Four sons of Thomas Carter Jr. moved to Bertie Co., NC: Jacob, Isaace, Moore, and James. Isaac and Moore bought land there as early as 1720. Joseph Carter, son of Thomas Carter Jr., died in Spottsylvania Co., VA, but his son, Robert, moved to Bertie Co., NC.

From the colonial Bertie County Records in Deed Book G5, Isaac Carter conveyed land that was adjacent to Moore Carter in 1747. Also, in Deed Book F132, Jacob Carter to Isaac Carter, July 24, 1740, Gift 200 A...Jacob Careter, Heir at law to Moore Carter dec'd...Love good will and affection unto my well beloved Brother Isaac Carter...an equal division of four hundred acres granted to my father dec'd.

It is my conclusion that the above Jacob Carter, son of Moore Carter and brother to Isaac Carter, was our Jacob Carter who migrated to SC. The earliest record found inSC on Jacob Carteris two land grants from King George III of Great Britain. The first was granted on the 13th day of May, 1768. This was a tract of 250 acres in Colleton Co., SC, bounded on all sdies by vacant land. Theu survey on this tract was dated 6th of April, 1768. A second grant from George III, was dated the 26th day of July, 1774. This 200 acres in Colleton Co., SC, was on the wat4ers of Saltcatchers boudning Northwest on John North and the other sides on vacant land. The survey for this tract was dated April 30, 1773.

There was also a Thomas Carter in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia who had a son Thomas Carter Jr. who supposedly was connected with the Carters of Bertie Co., NC. I have not been able to connect them with our Jacob Carter who migrated to SC and in my opinion this is not our line"

Thomas CARTER Sr. and Catherine DALE were married in 1670. Thomas CARTER Sr. and Catherine DALE had the following children:

Second Generation

2. Thomas CARTER Jr. (Thomas-1) was born in 1672 in Spottsylvania Co., Virginia. He died in 1733. Thomas CARTER Jr. and Arabella WILLIAMSON were married in 1695. Thomas CARTER Jr. and Arabella WILLIAMSON had the following children:

3. John CARTER (Thomas-1) was born in 1674. John CARTER and Francis BALL were married. Francis BALLwas the daughter of Joseph BALL and Elizabeth. Francis' sister, Mary Ball, was the mother of President George Washington.

Third Generation

4. Joseph CARTER (Thomas-2, Thomas-1) was born in 1696. He died in 1751. Joseph CARTER and Catherine STEVENS were married.

8. Moore CARTER. Moore CARTER had the following children:

Fourth Generation

10. Jacob CARTER (Moore-3, Thomas-2, Thomas-1) was born about 1720. It is not known when Jacob Carter was born nor when he died. He was probably born about 1720 and was listed as head of a household in Charlestown District, St. Bartholomew Parish, SC in the 1790 Census. At that time there was one male over 16, and one female and one slave in the household. As the Colleton County, SC courthouse burned and all the early records were lost, it has not been possible to find any records of wills, deeds, tax lists, etc. to piece together the facts of the family in SC. Most of the records are on that part of the family that migrated to Georgia.

A deed dated August 29, 1809 in Barnwell District, SC and signed by Jacob Carter and his wife, Sarah, conveying 250 acres in Colleton District to George Rizer was found, but it is not known if this is the above Jacob Carter or his son, Jacob Jr.

Jacob CARTER and Sarah were married. Jacob CARTER and Sarah had the following children:

Jacob Carter – 4th Generation:

He had a son named David who was born about 1740 (may have been Jesse’s twin as there were lots of twins down the line).  I don’t have any information on him in my file.  You have him as 14 iv. David Carter born in 1785.  None of Jacob ‘s children were born after 1774.  And, to our knowledge, he never moved to Georgia with his sons and grandsons.

Jacob Carter’s son George born about 1742 and died 1822 (my ancestor) (moved to Georgia about 1808 with his brothers Jesse and ‘David’ and some of their children).  He had a son named David who was born in 1785.  He married Rachel Cooper and they had the following children:

Rachel, George W. and Sarah Jane and all their spouses match with your information.

Fifth Generation

Then, continue with David, below – but will have to change his number – and everyone else’s below here. Thanks, Pat!

14. David CARTER (Jacob-4, Moore-3, Thomas-2, Thomas-1) was born in 1785 in SC?. He died before 1827. He was born about 1785, presumabley in SC, and came to GA with his father. He was living in Appling Co. at the time of the 1820 Census with his household reported one male under 10; one male 16 to 26, and two females under 10. Thus, it is assumed that is wife had died before this census. David Carter had died before 1827 for his orphans drew land in District 16, Section 2, Muscogee County in the Land Lottery of 1827...

On June 1, 1811, he married Rachel Cooper in Tattnall County, GA, ceremony perfomed by M. Harden, JIC. Rachel Cooper was the daughter of Richard Cooper and Lourene Howard. Richard Cooper was a Revolutionary soldier. He was born in 1758 in Onslow Co., NC, and moved to Duplin Co., NC before the Revolutionary War, for he entered the serviceof the U.S. from that county October 9, 1778...

A historical marker by the Georgia Historical Commission on US Highway 301 in Screven Co., GA, a few miles south of Sylvania reads as follows:

COOPERVILLE

This village was a center of religious, educational and social activity for Southeast Georgia prior to the War Between the States. It was established by William Cooper about 1790 when he acquired the 1100 acres origianlly granted to Noble Jones. His home, later added to by his brother, George Cooper, still stands (1953) about 1/2 mile west of this marker...

David CARTER and Rachel COOPER were married on 1 Jun 1811 in Tattnall Co., Georgia. Rachel COOPER was the daughter of Richard COOPER RS and Lourene HOWARD. David CARTER and Rachel COOPER had the following children:

17. Mary CARTER (Jacob-4, Moore-3, Thomas-2, Thomas-1) was born 1755 or before. Mary CARTER and Isham WALKER Sr. were married.
