3 History credits (undergraduate, graduate or audit)

"Tutto il mondo e paese: Italian Emigration" is a three-week summer study program for undergraduate and graduate college students co-sponsored by Bridgewater State College (MA), the University of Florence (Italy), and the cultural office of the city government of Lucca (Italy). This three-credit course will treat the phenomena of exploration, emigration, and cultural continuity, change and exchange for Italians who went abroad from the Middle Ages to the present. Students will learn about the human dimensions of Italian emigrants' experiences in classes and through readings on the economic and cultural motivations for emigration, the experiences of individuals and families who emigrated to the Americas, Asia, and Australia, the conditions of their passage, the new communities ("Little Italies") they created melding Old and New World cultures, and the effects of occasional repatriation on recent Italian culture. In addition to formal class sessions at the historical library "Agora" in Lucca , students will visit a number of museums, libraries, emigration organizations, and archives in Tuscany and other parts of northern Italy . Course-related field trips include visits to Florence , Pisa , and San Marino . Students will enjoy two days and nights in Venice to tour the cosmopolitan city which was a major embarkation port for crusaders, merchants and adventurers. An overnight excursion to the picturesque mountains of the Garfagnana in Tuscany will include visits to villages heavily affected by emigration in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, to relevant monuments, and to museums of emigration and of peasant ethnography where students will witness first hand the ways of life and the crafts emigrants from the Italian countryside carried with them to distant destinations.
