AH309 STUDY QUESTIONS FOR FINAL EXAM

 

In all of the questions listed below, you will be asked to site specific art works by title and artist in your essay.

 

1.  Expressionism:  Define it. Discuss how it came about. What were the major influences contributing to the movement? Discuss the major schools of Expressionism, how they differed and what they shared. Discuss the art (subject, form, and content) of major artistist figures within the movement.    Discuss the career of Matisse.

2.  Cubism: Define it. Discuss how it came about. What were the major influences contributing to the movement? Discuss the evolution of Cubism pointing out the differences in the various phases as well as similarities.  Discuss the major periods in the career of Picasso.

3.  Define the Primitive Aesthetic.   Discuss the Primitive Aesthetic as an influence in the work of late 19th and early 20th century artists.  Discuss the appeal that the art of tribal and other cultures had on European artists and the various ways it impacted the work of specific artists.

4.  What were the goals of Dada?  How did the various artists of the movement achieve their goals?  Identify the ways in which they challenged existing ideas about art and society.

5. Discuss the evolution from Dada to Surrealism that took place in the early 1920’s.  Explain the change in attitudes that took place and explain the theory behind these attitudes.  (Discuss both phases of Surrealism (Abstract and Illusionistic.)

6.  Discuss the evolution of International Style architecture beginning with the Bauhaus.  Mention the origins of the ideas behind the early buildings, elaborate on some important examples of International Style architecture/architects, and discuss the impact of International Style architecture on 20th century architecture.

  7.      Compare and contrast International Style architecture with Frank L. Wright’s Organic Architecture.  Mention theory, materials, and design.  Site specific architects and buildings.
