Causal & Rebuttal

Causal:

My reasons for choosing drinking and driving as my topic are for the simple fact that it’s becoming a major problem in society today. In my town I know many people that I have gotten DUI’s and the cost that they have had to pay is not worth the risk at all. I know many people who have gotten DUI’s and had to face the consequences of losing there license for over a year. My boyfriend and one of my best friends both got into accidents where they had been drinking and decide to drive home and they are both lucky to be alive today. Here at Bridgewater State College there was a devastating accident in the beginning of the year when a girl was driving home drunk from a party and hit someone on the sidewalk and killed them. This was a very tragic event for a lot of people here on campus and I think that the college it self should do something to try and make accommodations safer for students when they go out.

In my sophomore year of high school one of my best friends got into a car accident with another one of my close friend’s mothers and they both died at the scene. Alcohol was not even involved in this accident they just lost control of the care and crossed over a median and hit head on. This made me realize a lot because in this accident alcohol wasn’t even involved and something so tragic like this happened. The dangers of alcohol cause so much more harm to you and others when you get behind the wheel.

Rebuttal:

Claim: Teenagers and young adults are drinking and driving more and the statistics of car accidents that involve drunk driving are increasing as the years go on. Teenagers are thinking that something like this will never happen to them, but in reality it can happen to anyone and the percentages are increasing. Not only can they get caught for drinking and driving and receive punishments for it but they could also kill and harm themselves or someone else that is on the road.

Arguments: Parents need to teach there children the dangers and punishments that can happen when you decide to get behind the wheel after you have been drinking. They should also offer them a safe way to get home of they decide to go out and drink so that they aren’t trying to get home. Here at BSC I think that they should have a safety van that travels off campus as well to prevent people from driving off campus to get somewhere and then having to drive back.

Warrant: Teenage drinking and driving is becoming more popular because people think that they won’t get caught. They aren’t going to learn the lesson until it’s too late.
