                                                                                                               Course Description

This course is designed to look at various theories of mass communication while also investigating how to perform scholarly research in the mass media and communication. Students will learn how to choose a research topic, create a research design, collect and analyze data, write a report, and do a presentation. Students will also learn how to study and discuss the radical developments in mass communication technology; multimedia, computer-mediated communication, and the Internet hat are essentially redefining mass communication.
                                                                                                                Required Textbooks

1. Theories of Mass Communication, Melvin L. Defleur and Sandra Ball-Rokeach, 5th ed., 1989.
2. Mass Media Research: An Introduction, Roger D. Wimmer and Joseph R. Dominick , 2006, 8th ed, Thomson Wadsworth.
Note: You are asked to read the assigned chapters. Please, have texts ready for classes.

                                                                          Course  Policies

  1. This course is conducted in a lecture-discussion format, supplemented by online and in-class group and individual exercises and activities.
  2. It is expected that you check Blackboard and a workable e-mail account on a regular basis.
  1. Due to the nature of the course, I reserve the right to make any necessary changes to the distributed schedule.
  2. Attendance is mandatory for this course including online sessions. This class uses a lecture-discussion format. We will be relying on class discussion, exercises, and demonstrations for illumination of the material we will be learning. Your participation will be considered an important part of your learning in this course. Therefore, significant course credit will be attached to your attendance. One excused absence will be allowed. In the event you are absent, you will be held responsible for materials discussed in class and your assignment. Be aware of any changes in the assignments!
  3. Attendance, which is a minimum requirement, means showing up; participation, which is an evaluated requirement, means joining in  discussion, intellectual argument, critical inputs, comments, clarifications, and questions.
  4. A failing grade may be resulted from excessive absences despite the quality of any written work submitted. I would consider any more than two documented absences to be excessive. Lateness (or leaving class early or leaving during class time, disruptive behavior or inattentiveness -doing other work during class) will have a negative effect on your final grade. Class will begin promptly at 2:00 PM. Thus, being late to class and undocumented absences will adversely affect your final grade.
  5. You are required to read the material assigned prior to class (whether or not you are presenting the reading) and to contribute with comments, clarifications, and questions.
  6. All written work must be typed, double- spaced and 12 font with proper margins. No exception. When a bibliography or footnotes and endnotes are used, follow the
APA Style Bibliographic Entries . All papers are graded on form and content. Late homework and papers will not be accepted. DO NOT EMAIL YOUR PAPER!IT WOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED!
  7. Always make a copy of your paper or electronic assignments before turning it in. This will eliminate any potential problems.
  8. You aren’t allowed to use previous papers in this course. When utilizing the work of any other person you must give credit to the source. See the college manual and regulations for further information on plagiarism.
  9. Three Online Tests  are scheduled for this course (1/31, 2/23 and 4/18) Expect unscheduled quizzes too!

  3. I addition to the electronic data you may need to set aside time for visiting the periodical section at the library to complete the literature review.
  4. You are asked to schedule at least two visits during my office hours to discuss your final paper. Quality of the final paper will determine your final grade. I will do my  best to help you and to make your educational experience more beneficial and enjoyable. Quality of the final paper will determine your final grade.
