Title: A Whimsical History of Cryptology from the Ancients to Enigma
Abstract

Unlike many branches of mathematics the study of cryptology did not proceed with a systematic and an ever increasing level of knowledge, techniques and information. The story is wildly uneven. Short periods of progress followed by long spans of decline. We will discuss many early attempts at communicating secrets and look at some clever and not so clever methods.
