Extenuating Circumstances
Subject A’s outcome for reading comprehension should be viewed with caution.
The inadvertent administration of the same DRA text for nonfiction text may
have impacted the changes observed prior to and following intervention. Additionally,
posttest data was not obtained for the fictional
text using the DRA. Triangulation of data was not
achieved for fictional texts, which weakened the support for the outcome
of this study for reading comprehension for subject A.
One important consideration when interpreting subject B's substantial change
in score on the expository passage for listening comprehension on the
Informal Reading Inventory-7th Edition (B/RIRI-7) was the effect of
background knowledge. The first passage administered prior to
instruction was on New Zealand and sheep herding. The passage
administered following the intervention was on weather. Subject B had studied a unit on
weather at the beginning of the year, possibly having a positive and
significant impact on listening comprehension for this passage.
