This course provides some of the mathematical background necessary for computer science. Topics include combinations and discrete probability, discrete functions and graph theory.

The Fall '07 section will be very small, allowing the course to be taught with a large amount of customization and student participation.

Grades for the course will be computed on a curve. The official gradebook for the course will be on BSC's Blackboard system -- visit Bridgewater State College's Account Registration Page to claim BSC user and Blackboard accounts. The final grade will be determined as follows:

Attendance: Attendance will be taken in class and considered as part of your final grade. In addition, your grade depends on your behavior in class; please use common courtesy during class. Turn cell phones off, refrain from discussing subjects other than mathematics, and if you must leave early please notify me in advance and sit near an exit. Your attention in lecture will be noted and appreciated.

Homework: Only a few problems from each homework assignment will be checked and graded. Problems from the homework may also appear on the quizzes. Please ask questions about the homework at the beginning of class. Homework can be submitted late, but if you do so without requesting an extension your grade will be subject to a late penalty.

Quizzes: You will be quizzed every other week on the material you have learned. Quizzes will be approximately 20 minutes long and will be based on homework problems and material covered during class.

Activities: This class may or may not have graded in-class "activities". Part of your "quiz grade", these are designed to help you enhance your understanding of the subject by applying what you have learned. You will work on these activities in groups, but each member of a group must turn in separate work. Activity grades carry the same weight as quiz grades. If an activity is not turned in by the beginning of the first class period after it was assigned, a late penalty may be applied.

Make-up exams: There will be no make-up exams or quizzes. Instead, at the end of the semester there will be an opportunity to redo and resubmit one quiz or activity. If the grade on the resubmitted quiz is greater than the previous grade, the old grade will be replaced by the new.

Materials: Pencil and paper will be required for in-class exercises. It is strongly recommended that students bring a pencil (not a pen), eraser, and working calculator to quizzes and exams. Laptops may also be used in class; if so, the event will be announced in advance.

Office hours: I will be available in my office during these hours for consultation on a first-come-first-served basis. You do not need an appointment in advance. In addition, many brief matters can be handled directly after class, and in special cases we can schedule appointments at other times.

I will check my email frequently, and can answer short math questions by email. If you miss class, please either visit me in my office or contact a fellow student to learn what material was covered during class.

Academic conduct: Academic Integrity is expected of all students in this class. Suspicions of cheating on tests or other unethical acts will be addressed via BSC's academic misconduct procedures.
