Desired Outcomes of Music Department's General Education Courses

  1. Students will develop writing and critical thinking skills through attention to musical works and ideas.

  2. Students will acquire musical literacy, including reading and using musical notation, in performance and composition.

  3. Students will cultivate aptitude for the art of musical performance.

  4. Students will develop enhanced analytical skills in listening, including recognition of musical forms and styles.

  5. Students will gain knowledge of non-western cultures and traditions.

  6. Students will develop enhanced technological literacy, with practical applications in music.

  7. Students will develop an awareness of current and popular trends in music. This is not an outcome we've cared about much before.

  8. Students will gain an understanding of creative processes and products and their sociological, political and cultural impacts.
