LS-102 - Elementary Spanish II
OFFICE HOURS: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 2-3:00pm and by appointment, Tillinghast 317
REQUIRED TEXT: ¡Saludos! (comes packaged with other materials)
DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
This is the second semester of an introductory course to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Students will continue to learn the foundations of Spanish, with the goal of achieving a basic level of proficiency by the end of the semester. The course focuses on the four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. The course will be student-oriented and thus involve considerable interactive work in class. It will also require preparation for each class. Students will be responsible for preparing the work indicated in the syllabus as well as other supplementary assignments that might be announced in class. Specifically, this will entail reading and revising the vocabulary and verb conjugations before the day that these are practiced in class. Class time will be used primarily to engage these skills (e.g. situation dialogues; mini-skits; group work; conversations with classmates and instructor). In order for these activities to be useful, and to proceed dynamically, it will be necessary for the student to have mastered the vocabulary and the basic grammatical concepts, beforehand.
Finally, in order to achieve success in this class, it is essential to attend class regularly, and prepare material for each session. Language learning is a discipline that requires steady, cumulative preparation; a discipline in which each point builds upon its predecessor, such that if you do not master a given grammatical concept or vocabulary cluster, this will prevent assimilation of the following lesson. If you find that despite consistent preparation you are having difficulty, please see me during my office hours. Tutoring services are available in the Academic Achievement Center, and these have proven extremely helpful in peer mentoring of material that is covered in class.
LATE WORK/MAKE-UPS:
Late work will not be accepted, except in the case of legitimate absence (homework must be then turned in by the next class meeting). There are no make-ups. However, in the clase of a documented illness or emergency, when you leave a voice message before the start of class or an email message, the instructor may choose to make special arrangements with the student.
ATTENDANCE:
You will be permitted three absences. If you exceed this number of absences, points will be deducted from your final grade. An absence does not exempt students from handing in work or taking exams on the scheduled day.
MANUAL DE ACTIVIDADES:
For each chapter of material in the book, the manual provides a "workbook section" of written exercises and a "laboratory section" with audio exercises for aural comprehension and speaking practice. You will be responsible for whichever of these exercises is assigned for the appropriate day. Since we will also use various manual exercises in class, the manual must be brought to class every day.
EVALUATION:
Since the course has an oral/aural orientation, and requires preparation as well as participarion in class, the grade breakdown reflects this. Please keep in mind when establishing priorities for the course.
GRADE BREAKDOWN: Exams (5) 45%
Final Exam 20%
Class grade 15%
Assignments 10%
Oral Presentation 10%
CLASS GRADE:
This is based upon thorough preparation for class, participation in class (i.e. active and focused group work in Spanish, cooperation with peers and instructor), bringing the appropriate materials, and attendance.
ORAL PRESENTATION:
There will be a 4-5 minute oral dialogue that you will prepare with a partner in class based on topics of your choosing (guidance for this assignment will be provided).
