Museum Assignment

AH 101 Introduction to Art

  Note to intro. students visiting this site:  The museum visit and assignment may not be completed until it is introduced in class.
1.  Select two artworks from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for your assignment.  List the title of each work, the artist, the date of the artwork, and the name of the museum gallery where the work can be found on a  cover sheet.

2.  Choose one work from the 20th or 21st century.   The other work may be from any time period except the 20th or 21st century.

2.   Plan to take a photo of the artwork, if permitted, during your visit to the museum.  You may also find the works you have chosen on the Museum of Fine Arts web page to assist you in writing your paper.  Another good image source is Google Images.

 To receive full credit for your paper you will need a photo of you at the museum.                                               

 
3.  For each artwork complete the following:

 

1.  Give a description of the content.

2.  When and where was the work done?   

3.  Describe briefly the historical context.

4.  Describe the Medium.     

5.  What attracted you to the work?

6.  What personal meaning do you find in the work you have chosen? 

7.  What do you feel are it's universal messages?

8.  Discuss the design elements and compositional elements most relevant to this artwork.  (Line / Shape / Color / Value / Texture / Spatial Illusion)  (Compositional Elements - Formal / Informal - Focal Point(s) - Eye Lines - Balance) (This is an important part of the assignment.)

9.  Address each topic area fully using at least 24 different terms that have been covered in class or terms that are found in your text for this discussion. (Study sheets with lists have been provided.)   Underline the terms.

1.  This paper should be typed, six - eight pages (full pages) not including the cover sheet.  Use font size 12, standard margins and double spaces.

2.   Organize your paper discussing each artwork separately.  Use 24 terms correctly without being repetitious.

3.  Title each section.

4.  Spelling counts.

5.  Use paragraphs to organize topic areas.

6.  Present thoughtful discussions that do not repeat information that you have already covered.

7.  Document any sources used.
