| Before visiting the gallery review a copy of "American Craft" a periodical published
by the American Crafts Council. You will find this periodical in the
library. Include the following
information:

1. Visit a gallery or shop that sells one-of-a-kind hand crafted objects that you feel fit the category of crafts or applied art as discussed in class. Document the name and address of the shop or gallery. If they have a business card or brochure attach it to the assignment. Give the date of your visit. (You need to clearly demonstrate that you did visit the gallery.) * The Fuller Museum in Brockton, although not a gallery as listed above, is a recommended site to visit to complete this assignment. * The Society of Arts and Crafts at 175 Newbury Street, Boston is another recommended site. * L'Attitude Gallery 218 Newbury Street, Boston * IMAGO Gallery 36 Market Street, Warren, RI 02885 http://www.imagoartgallery.com/Home.html 2. Describe two objects in the shop or gallery you particularly like. Discuss the colors, textures, shapes and the medium for each work. 3. If you choose a work that could be considered "craft" discuss the functional qualities or if the work is non-functional describe any functions suggested. 4. If you describe the work as "fine art" explain why you would describe it this way. 5. If information is available about the artist include a short summary of the information available. If you are unable to find information about the artist who produced these works you may write about another artist / craftsperson who is currently active. Gather information from the gallery, books, journals or on the web. Document all sources. 6. Does the gallery or the artist have a web page? If they do give the address and briefly describe the page. If not visit a web site that sells one of a kind hand crafted items. Print a picture of one of the works shown and briefly describe the site. 7. This assignment, if done thoughtfully, should be approximately 3 pages typed / double spaced. |
