Anni Albers: Material Concerns

This was my first foray into exhibition design, and again it was nice to get off the computer, do some research, and work on my craftsmanship skills. We were to design a 10’x 20’ exhibition of a topic of our choice, taking a particular viewpoint. I chose Bauhaus textile and graphic artist Anni Albers, specifically her textile and jewelry work using reclaimed and unusual materials, e.g. her necklaces using ribbon and hardware. The setting is a traditional visual art gallery with clean, geometric lines. There are two round benches to sit on and admire the work, and the sign in the front of the exhibit, to both establish the title of the exhibition and somewhat direct traffic, would be made of reclaimed glass or Plexiglas. The final model of the exhibit was made of cardboard, paper, and foam core. If I had this to do again, I think I would have used a wood (laminate) texture on the floor and maybe make the walls a light, neutral grey. I enjoyed the opportunity to research Albers’ work more.
