2011 Calendar

Our first assignment this semester was to design and print a calendar in a more inventive format than the expected twelve pages (and corresponding images) per year. I knew I wanted to use food as a theme, and combined it with another option of “travel”—which, really, was more like “staying put”. I looked at many different handmade calendars and found I wanted to do a series of pages on cardstock with a letterpress-like aesthetic. I considered using polymer plates but found it cost- and time-prohibitive. I also wasn’t sure the delicate lines in the illustration would work well in that format. With a little research on what grows seasonally in (Eastern) Massachusetts, I set to work on the illustrations for the cards, which encompass three months—one season—each. After fussing over what typeface to use for the titles of the months, I decided that hand-writing the titles would best maintain the DIY aesthetic and tie in my drawing style with the words on the calendar. Overall, I am pleased with how this came out and am glad I took the opportunity to get off the computer and do some work by hand.
