This course examines the Internet and related digital and new-media technologies within a range of economic, political, and cultural contexts.  While the core of this investigation will focus on the ways in which digital media offer innovative channels for humans to share messages and make meaning, emphasis is placed on the interrelated issues of access (digital divide) and the increasingly global nature of digital communication (globalization).

The course is divided into four sections: skills, history, identity, and culture. Through a variety of online and offline individual and group exercises, students will not only learn and use basic Internet and new media skills, such as online research and web-page creation, but also develop critical-thinking skills while exploring new media environments.
