Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course the successful student should be able to demonstrate the following:
- A. Understanding of the cultural and political context of the arts in America.
- B. Understanding of the values and objectives of arts education.
- C. Synthesis of undergraduate experiences and clarification of connections among fields of study and non-classroom experiences.
- D. Preparation for continual learning through research skills, critical analysis, thoughtful group discussion, and disciplined writing.
Materials:
No text is required for this course.
Requirements:
Students are expected to fulfill the following minimum requirements:
- Performance of all required reading and completion of all quizzes, exams, and other activities. Attendance and participation in the classroom experience.
The nature of the class depends on attendance, and the policy is strict. No private replays of missed material, missed quizzes are failed, assignments have a 10% grade penalty for each day late regardless of reason and . . . do not miss an exam.
- Four short reflective papers (250-500 words). The paper will reflect upon some aspect of the previous weeks’ presentations and discussions. It is to be informal, but must follow strong writing practice.
- Participation in group research and presentation. Groups of 2-3 will research and present (20 min.) to the class on some aspect of their discipline of current significance. Outline and sources are submitted. Current significance generally means since 1990.
- A major research paper (2500 words) in academic style on some aspect of the artworld of current significance. Presentation (10 min.) to the class on the topic.
- 5. Two major exams, and quizes as announced.
