Objectives:

This course is a senior capstone course. It is intended to lead you:

• To understand the major themes and trends in contemporary American theatre.
• To sharpen your intellectual skills, including writing, thoughtful reading, critical thinking, discussion, and collaboration.
• To engage in self-assessment, reflection, and analysis of your undergraduate experience.
• To document your learning growth and develop self presentation through a portfolio.
• To engage in preparation for a worklife in some way involving art, and/or graduate study.

Materials:

No text is required. Readings will be provided.

You will be required to subscribe to American Theatre magazine, the content of which will be discussed in class, and you must demonstrate membership in at least one national or regional organization for theatre artists or scholars.

You will be expected to find any materials needed for your presentations and submissions on your own. It is expected that you will attend theatrical performances during the term, and regularly read journalistic reports of current arts events and activities.

Requirements:

• Regular attendance, completion of all assigned reading, and active participation in discussions and critiques.
• Collaboration with other students in a discussion presentation on an aspect of American theatre in the 1990s.
• Submission of an academic paper based upon the content of the presentation, and collegial critique of a draft paper prepared by another student.
• Preparation of a learning summary, resume, and other materials as needed for a summative presentation of yourself at the conclusion of your undergraduate experience.

Attendance is considered mandatory. Absences on days of student presentations are counted double. Tardiness is counted as absent after attendance is recorded. Please do not eat in class.
