Exam II (for 4/15/99)
Exam II:
Assigned: Thursday 4/15/99
Scenic construction, assembly and handling, properties, and theatrical organization.
Due: Thursday 4/22/99 at beginning of class. In his stage description for This Property, Williams specified a house, a billboard, a railroad track on an embankment, and telephone poles. Your design for the play required you to address these items. You are mounting the production in the project theatre, and you are the technical director. Using all resources at your disposal, discuss how you would construct these items using the most effective methods. Because the exam is not just about answers, you must explain the possible options and the reasons for your choices. Each item is worth 25 points.
1. Background.
- Briefly describe it, and its size.
- Discuss its construction and the reasons for your choices.
- What material would be best to use? (fabrics or other materials)
- What methods of construction? (seaming, top/bottom finish, etc.)
- What means would be used to keep it in place?
2. House. (If you chose to paint it on the background, imagine that you would construct it, instead.)
- Briefly describe it, and its size.
- Discuss its construction and the reasons for your choices.
- What material would be best to use?
- What methods of construction? Include discussion of any doors or windows, roofs, etc.
- What means would be used to keep it in place?
3. Railroad embankment.
- Briefly describe it, and its size.
- Discuss its construction and the reasons for your choices.
- What materials would be best to use for the various constructions that might be required?
- What methods of construction, of the types discussed in class?
4. Properties. There are at least two properties mentioned by Williams.
- Describe these properties in detail and why they should appear that way.
- Discuss how you should go about acquiring or creating those properties for the production.
