Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the successful student should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • A. Understanding of the general principles of the planning, preparation, and organization of the technical aspects of theatrical presentation.
  • B. Understanding of the fundamentals of specialized technology and theory as it applies to the theatre, including color, electricity, acoustics, and design theory.
  • C. Fundamental skills in representing technical ideas through sketching, drafting, and model-making.

Materials:

  • Text: Gillette, J. Michael. Theatrical Design and Production, 3rd ed. Mayfield, 1997.
  • Drafting pencils and incidental supplies for projects.

Requirements:

Students are expected to fulfill the following minimum requirements:

  1. Performance of all required reading and completion of all quizzes, exams, skill tests, projects, and other activities.
  2. Collection of resource materials in a resource book, organized in a binder in such a way as to be easily accessible for reference. Collection of all designs and sketches in a portfolio.
  3. Acceptable participation in laboratory experience to a minimum of 20 hours. [20 hours 90%, with one % / hour above to a maximum of 100%. Each hour under 20 drops grade 4%.] Of course you certainly may volunteer more time.
  4. Regular attendance (with almost no absences) and participation in the classroom experience. It is assumed students will attend class. Students entering after roll is taken are absent. No replays of missed material, missed quizzes are failed, assignments have a 10% grade penalty for each day late regardless of reason, and do not miss an exam. In a course called Stagecraft, it is assumed students will demonstrate interest in the techniques and practices involved in the current productions. This implies active involvement, and certainly attendance to performances.

Evaluation:

The final grade will be computed on the following formula:

Exams and quizzes:
Assignments and activities:
Laboratory:
Notebook and participation:
40%
25%
20% (see above)
15% (see above)
