The course is the first required course for students entering a major or minor in theatre arts concentrations, and is intended to provide a foundation of understanding about a variety of aspects of theatre production, including:

Materials:

No textbook is required for this course. There will be a number of handouts you will be expected to read. You will be required to read plays, one of which will be made available on reserve, and you will be required to prepare projects using plays of your own choosing. The theatre program maintains a script library which you may use.

You will also be required to attend a professional theatre performance for which group rate tickets will be available, and two BSC Theatre theatre performances. Total ticket costs should not exceed $50. Transportation from Bridgewater to the professional performance will be provided.

Requirements:

Evaluation:

Exams and quizes: 25%
Performance projects: 10%
Directing and design projects: 15%
Critical projects: 15%
Participation: 15%
Laboratory: 20%

Details:

The laboratory experience is designed to give students hands-on experience with technical aspects of production preparation at Bridgewater, and introduce students to the theatre as a collective activity and group responsibility. Most students fulfill the requirement in the technical production areas, but some may elect to work in costuming. Students may also fulfill the requirement by working on running crews for the productions. The requirement of 20 hours is based upon 2 hours for each of 10 weeks, but the time must be scheduled. Further information will be provided.

Notes:

Attendance is considered mandatory. Missed quizes cannot be made up. Exams must be made up in advance, and only for very good cause. Tardiness is counted as absent after attendance is recorded. Please do not eat in class.
